Kickstarting the day with tea or coffee is a common ritual, providing warmth and comfort as you wake. However, nutrition experts warn that this practice might not be ideal for gut wellness. Maintaining a healthy gut is crucial, as it influences how energetic and at ease you feel during the day. An unsettled gut can lead to issues like acidity, bloating, gas, or discomfort.
To explore better morning drink choices, HTLifestyle consulted with Sonia Mehta, a nutritionist and founder of EverBloom. According to her, the first beverages after waking significantly impact digestion throughout the day. Consuming tea and coffee on an empty stomach can heighten acidity and disturb the stomach.
Sonia pointed out that many overlook their morning digestive issues, yet these subtle signs indicate an imbalanced gut. When the gut is off-kilter, your entire day can feel uncomfortable. Hence, she recommends opting for beverages that nurture digestion, allowing the stomach to gradually awaken while easing any irritation.
She advised enjoying these gut-supporting options at least 15 minutes prior to breakfast to allow for optimal absorption. Additionally, diversifying these drinks throughout the week can expose the gut to various plant compounds and keep the routine engaging.
Here are Sonia's five recommended morning drinks for enhanced gut health:
1. Warm Lemon Water
A simple yet effective drink, warm lemon water aids digestion, alleviates bloating, and gently awakens the gut. The vitamin C in lemons also boosts immunity.
2. Jeera Water (Cumin Water)
Cumin seeds are known for their ability to reduce gas and acidity, making jeera water a calming morning choice for a light stomach.
3. Soaked Fenugreek Water
Fenugreek seeds are effective in managing acidity and promoting smooth digestion, particularly beneficial for those prone to bloating.
4. Ginger Water
Ginger is famed for its anti-inflammatory properties, aiding those who may feel nauseous or uneasy in the morning.
5. Aloe Vera Juice (in moderation)
Aloe vera can be soothing for the stomach, facilitating smooth bowel movements and minimizing irritation.
Sonia cautioned that if any drink exacerbates symptoms like acidity or discomfort, it should be discontinued immediately, and a doctor should be consulted. Each individual’s body reacts differently, so what's suitable for one might not be for another.
Moreover, she emphasized that optimal gut health relies on comprehensive habits, including a balanced diet, sufficient hydration, quality sleep, and stress management. However, beginning the morning with the right drink is a minor adjustment that can lead to significant improvements.
By substituting tea and coffee for these beneficial alternatives—at least on certain days—individuals can experience noticeable enhancements in gut comfort. A healthy gut contributes to a more productive day, establishing a habit that fosters long-term digestive health naturally.
