The Kerala Principal District and Sessions Court, presided by Judge Honey M Varghese, has acquitted actor Dileep in the abduction and sexual assault case involving a prominent actress. While Dileep was cleared of conspiracy charges, six co-accused were convicted, with their sentencing set for December 12.
Dileep, a notable figure in the Malayalam cinema, faced arrest in 2017 and spent three months in detention before securing bail. The allegations against him included orchestrating the kidnapping and assault of the actress during her transit from Thrissur to Kochi in February 2017.
Post-verdict, Dileep asserted to reporters that he has been the target of a malicious plot designed to dismantle his career and societal standing, proclaiming himself as “the real victim.” In contrast, Kerala's Law Minister P Rajeev emphasized that the survivor's quest for justice is not entirely fulfilled, promising that the government would appeal the ruling. “We will ensure that further legal actions are taken,” he affirmed.
This case attracted substantial media scrutiny due to the high profiles of those involved. The survivor, five years post-assault, courageously shared her ordeal in 2022, detailing her harrowing transition from being a victim to a resilient survivor. She disclosed that her aggressors recorded the incident, presumably intending to intimidate her. Additionally, she recounted the pervasive online harassment she endured, facing moral interrogations about her lifestyle and journey.
The case incited public uproar, prompting the Kerala state to establish a committee led by a former High Court judge to identify and examine the hurdles confronting women within the film industry. The Hema Committee's findings underscored pervasive issues, revealing the influence of powerful males and the rampant sexual harassment women encounter.
Positioned as a pivotal moment in India's cinematic narrative, this case lays bare the precariousness women face in esteemed professions and the complexities inherent in pursuing justice for high-profile offenses. The verdict has generated extensive discussions across media and social networks, with the Kerala government gearing up to appeal for the sake of justice for the complainant.
