HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), shared that DEWA’s recent visit to China shows how serious Dubai is about becoming a world leader in clean energy and sustainability. This visit supports two big goals: the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net-Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. These plans aim to make Dubai a global center for green energy and to reduce harmful carbon emissions.
Al Tayer explained that the trip was an important step to build stronger relationships with big companies and research centers in China. These partnerships will help Dubai bring in the latest technologies in solar energy and energy storage. The goal is to improve Dubai’s clean energy projects, especially at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world, which is located in Dubai.
The DEWA team included top officials like Waleed bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence, and Ghanim Alqassim, Senior Manager for Solar Energy.
During the trip, the DEWA team met with famous global companies working in solar and energy storage. This visit came after a successful roadshow held by DEWA in Dubai in April, where nearly 100 experts and company representatives from around the world came together to discuss clean energy.
In China, the DEWA team met with leaders from several top companies like Sungrow, China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC), Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), Tesla, State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), and Huawei. They discussed how these companies are using the latest solar and battery storage technology. This knowledge will help DEWA build the next phase of the solar park and keep Dubai ahead in clean energy and innovation.
DEWA also held a special forum in Shanghai, where they invited top Chinese solar and battery companies. During this forum, DEWA shared updates on the achievements of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park and presented plans for its seventh phase. They also had a question-and-answer session, showing that DEWA is open to working closely and honestly with international partners.
So far, 47 international companies have shown interest in helping to develop the seventh phase of the solar park. This phase will produce 1,600 megawatts (MW) of power, and may even grow to 2,000 MW. It will use photovoltaic solar panels and include a battery storage system that can store up to 6,000 megawatt-hours of electricity, which means it will be one of the largest solar-plus-storage projects in the world.
This new phase is expected to be completed in stages between 2027 and 2029. With these steps, Dubai continues to grow as a leader in clean energy and a green economy.
