On Friday morning, the residents of New Delhi and adjacent NCR areas greeted light rain and overcast skies, marking a welcome reprieve from an oppressive heatwave that had dominated the region for several days. The unexpected shift in weather ushered in cooler breezes and a noticeable drop in temperature, providing essential respite from the summer's extreme conditions.
As per the updates from the India Meteorological Department, the onset of rainfall and thunderstorms was attributed to weather disturbances sweeping across northwest India. These showers played a crucial role in diminishing temperatures, delivering temporary solace to those enduring the sweltering heat of the capital.
Prior to the rain, Delhi had been sweltering under extreme heat, with temperatures soaring above 43 degrees Celsius. The Safdarjung weather station recorded a peak of 43.3 degrees Celsius, which remained higher than the seasonal average, even with the slight cooling attributed to shifting wind patterns.
Weather analysts noted that dry winds originating from Rajasthan and the Thar Desert had exacerbated the heatwave, creating a parched atmosphere. Nevertheless, the recent alteration in wind direction introduced a short-lived cooling effect alongside increased moisture content in the air.
The IMD has cautioned that heatwave conditions could persist in Delhi until May 28, with temperatures possibly climbing back to near 45 degrees Celsius in the coming days as hot desert winds return to northern India.
Meteorologists also foresee possibilities of sporadic thunderstorms and light rain during evening and early morning hours over the next few days. However, these occurrences are not anticipated to have a prolonged impact on daytime temperatures.
Experts suggest that the anticipated pre-monsoon activity in early June may offer more lasting relief from the current heatwave. Meanwhile, residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit exposure to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, and heed official weather advisories.
