Delhi air crisis: expert details health risks and practical protections

Post by : Saif Nasser

Delhi's air quality has dropped to hazardous levels once again, with the AQI well above recommended thresholds. The dense smog is causing coughing, breathlessness and fatigue across the city. Experts caution the burden extends beyond respiratory symptoms — Tanisha Bawa, a specialist in hormone and gut health, warns that polluted air can impact the heart, endocrine system, brain and immune function.

Bawa pointed out that fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can pass from the lungs into the bloodstream and trigger inflammation throughout the body. This low-grade, invisible inflammation can present as persistent tiredness, altered mood, difficulty concentrating and other systemic issues. She noted on Instagram on November 5 that while people cannot develop immunity to pollution, they can take steps to improve their resilience to its effects.

To reduce harm, Bawa recommends practical measures: increase intake of antioxidant-rich foods, keep hydrated, support gut health with fermented foods, and incorporate stress-reduction practices. She also advises minimizing outdoor time during peak pollution, and using indoor air purifiers where feasible.

Medical professionals stress that chronic exposure to polluted air raises the likelihood of cardiovascular disease, asthma, thyroid dysfunction, hormonal disturbances and weakened immunity. Residents are urged to adopt protective behaviours such as wearing certified pollution masks, avoiding heavy-traffic periods and maintaining cleaner indoor environments to limit dust and smog ingress.

Bawa emphasised that modest, consistent daily adjustments — balanced eating, regular hydration, managing stress and improving indoor air quality — can collectively strengthen the body's ability to cope with Delhi's toxic air.
