Netflix has launched a four-part docuseries focusing on Sean “Diddy” Combs's criminal investigation and subsequent conviction, despite assertions from his legal counsel that the footage was utilized without consent.
Entitled Sean Combs: The Reckoning, this series showcases archival footage filmed during the lead-up to Combs's 2024 indictment, capturing his consultations with attorneys and team members as they maneuver through the legal ramifications.
Representatives for Combs have labeled the docuseries a “shameful hit piece,” claiming that Netflix aired materials that were not authorized by the artist. They emphasized that Combs has chronicled his life and career from the age of 19, arguing that the release is “fundamentally unfair and illegal.”
Produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, a longtime adversary of Combs, the director maintains that all footage was obtained lawfully and that attempts were made to contact Combs’s representatives for their insights, though no response was received.
Combs faced convictions on two counts related to engaging in prostitution transport, while he was acquitted of charges linked to sex trafficking and conspiracy. A four-year prison sentence was handed down, deemed relatively lenient given the potential maximum penalties.
The series features interviews with jurors discussing pivotal trial moments, including security footage of Combs allegedly assaulting his former girlfriend, Cassandra Ventura, in 2016. Though this incident was excluded from the trial due to statute of limitations, jurors noted it influenced their perceptions of Combs.
Jurors also reflected on Combs's connections and scrutinized the reliability of testimony from his former assistant, who alleged she was abducted at gunpoint.
Sean Combs: The Reckoning delves into the legal proceedings as well as Combs's public persona, raising ethical questions about documentary storytelling and the implications of featuring personal footage against the subject's consent.
