Bangladesh Earthquake Claims More Lives as Fresh Tremors Strike

Post by : Raina Nasser

Bangladesh is grappling with the aftermath of a significant earthquake that struck near Dhaka last Friday, with officials reporting that the death toll has now reached 10. Hundreds more have sustained injuries, and numerous residences have suffered visible damage. The 5.5-magnitude quake sent shockwaves through the capital and surrounding regions, igniting widespread fear among the populace.

On Saturday morning, just a day after the primary quake, another tremor jolted the country at 10:36 am. According to the national meteorological department, this latest quake measured 3.3 on the Richter scale, originating from Ashulia, located just north of Dhaka. Experts have indicated that while smaller aftershocks are typical following a significant event, the frequency of these tremors has heightened anxiety levels among residents.

Residents near Ashulia expressed their fears regarding the recent jolt. One local recounted her experience, stating she had never encountered such a powerful quake before. She noted cracks in several homes in her area and mentioned that many families were hesitant to remain indoors. Additionally, she shared how glass items in her home shattered during the initial quake.

In response to Friday's seismic event, the government has activated the national emergency operation center to evaluate the damages and coordinate rescue and relief efforts. Officials are diligently inspecting compromised buildings and closely monitoring the situation.

According to experts from the Earthquake Observation and Research Centre, Bangladesh's geographic location makes it naturally vulnerable to earthquakes. They observed that while minor tremors are frequently felt, an earthquake of this magnitude has not impacted the nation in over a century. Experts anticipate more aftershocks, but emphasize that they typically do not result in significant destruction.

With millions residing in densely populated areas, authorities are advising citizens to remain vigilant and heed safety directives. Rescue teams are actively canvassing affected locales, while engineers are evaluating the integrity of damaged structures.

As aftershocks persist, many remain anxious; however, officials assure the public that monitoring systems are operational and that relief efforts are progressing to assist those impacted.
