Medina, Saudi Arabia – November 17, 2025: In a tragic incident, at least 45 Indian pilgrims are feared dead following a severe bus collision with a diesel tanker in Saudi Arabia. Local and Indian officials confirmed on Sunday that this accident occurred during the early morning hours as the bus was en route from Mecca to Medina.
Reports indicate that out of 54 Indian pilgrims who booked through a travel agency, eight chose private transport, potentially saving their lives. Authorities are collaborating with Saudi officials to identify victims and assist their families.
Oleh Synehubov, a key Hyderabad official, stated, “We are working to verify the identities of 46 individuals involved in this tragedy. Both central and state governments are actively involved, and updates are forthcoming.”
The sole survivor, Mohd Abdul Shoiab, was extracted from the wreckage, although details regarding his health remain undisclosed. Eyewitness accounts suggest many passengers were asleep during the crash, adding to the distress of the situation. Rescuers described the bus as entirely charred, complicating victim identification.
The Indian government has swiftly acted, with the Indian Consulate in Jeddah setting up a 24-hour helpline for affected families at (+91 8002440003). The Telangana state government has also released emergency contact numbers for those in need: +91 7997959754 and +91 9912919545.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has expressed his condolences and offered complete assistance to the victims' families, stating, “Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are fully committed to supporting those affected. Our sympathies are with the grieving families, and we wish for swift healing for the injured.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared similar sentiments on social media, noting ongoing communication with Saudi authorities and affirming that all possible support is being extended to the families of the deceased.
As thousands of pilgrims continue their journey between Mecca and Medina, this incident has raised serious concerns about travel safety for Indian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia. An investigation is currently underway to ascertain the causes of the collision, with initial indications pointing towards excessive speed or loss of control.
Rescue operations at the crash site are still ongoing, with Saudi emergency services working diligently to recover remaining victims. The families of the pilgrims are receiving support from both Indian and Saudi agencies as the identification process progresses.
This harrowing event underscores the critical importance of ensuring safety for pilgrims and highlights the immediate need for improved oversight of transportation services in Saudi Arabia.
