KYIV — Early Friday witnessed a series of Russian drone and missile assaults on Kyiv, claiming at least three lives and injuring more than 26, as reported by Ukrainian officials. Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko characterized the strikes as “massive,” with explosions causing fires and damaging residential buildings, hospitals, schools, and administrative facilities throughout the city.
The attacks compromised parts of Kyiv’s heating and energy systems, leaving several northeastern buildings without heating options. Both electricity and water supplies might have also been disrupted. Emergency responders labored through the night, rescuing over 40 individuals trapped in fires and rubble, including 14 from a residential structure in the Desnayanskyi district, where one fatality occurred.
Tymur Tkachenko, chief of Kyiv’s military administration, quickly urged residents to seek shelter shortly after midnight, posting on Telegram, “it’s loud in Kyiv.” Medical personnel were dispatched to all affected zones, resulting in the hospitalization of nine individuals, including one in critical condition.
Ukraine’s air force confirmed that other regions, including Sumy, also faced drone bombardments and guided bomb strikes. These strikes follow closely on the heels of a prior Russian attack that left six casualties and damaged crucial energy infrastructure, a tactic seen repeatedly throughout this ongoing conflict.
Russia’s defense ministry reported intercepting or downing 216 Ukrainian drones that were allegedly targeting its industrial sites and causing disruptions in air traffic. Moscow asserts that its strikes on energy infrastructure aim to weaken Ukraine’s military capabilities.
The continuous attacks on civilian-operated infrastructure have intensified Ukrainian leadership's calls for tighter sanctions against Russian energy exports. President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged Western nations to impose sanctions “without exceptions,” highlighting the strategic importance of energy targets in Russia’s sustained campaign.
As Kyiv begins to recuperate from the overnight assaults, authorities have cautioned residents to stay alert while emergency services strive to restore utilities and remove debris. The latest drone and missile attacks accentuate the enduring threat posed to Ukraine’s civilian population and critical infrastructure.
