"We are educated, progressive people. Hum modern log hain." This phrase encapsulates the spirit of De De Pyaar De 2, a romantic comedy that examines contemporary relationships with wit and sincerity. The film is notable for portraying women as strong, articulate individuals rather than mere possessions—a refreshing departure from numerous clichéd narratives in the genre.
Rakul Preet Singh stars as Ayesha, a determined woman romantically involved with her older, divorced boyfriend, Ashish (played by Ajay Devgn). Her parents, portrayed by R. Madhavan and Gautami Kapoor, are supportive and progressive, but their modern outlook is challenged when they discover Ashish's age. Madhavan's role as the overprotective father adds humor while critiquing societal norms surrounding age and relationships.
Although Ajay Devgn doesn’t have extensive screen time, his portrayal of a steady and mature partner resonates strongly. The supporting cast, including Jaaved and Meezaan Jaaferi, Suhasini Mulay, and Ishita Dutta, brings warmth, humor, and emotional depth, highlighted by unforgettable moments like sharing a Punjabi breakfast or offering grandparental advice.
The movie deftly confronts issues such as ageism, patriarchal pressures, emotional manipulation, and societal double standards, fostering essential discussions. Ayesha’s autonomy showcases the evolving representation of women in romantic comedies. Furthermore, the film playfully nods to pop culture and Bollywood classics, adding charm while maintaining its core message.
Overall, De De Pyaar De 2 is an engaging romantic comedy that artfully balances humor with a serious examination of modern love. It honors its audience by challenging outdated norms while still allowing for moments of joy—even if a few expletives are toned down.
