British-Hungarian author David Szalay has been honored with the 2025 Booker Prize for his novel Flesh, an insightful and minimalist narrative examining the life of an ordinary man and the silent emotions that influence human connections.
The 51-year-old author emerged victorious against five other competitors, including well-known names like Andrew Miller and Kiran Desai, earning him the prestigious accolade. Along with global recognition, Szalay received a prize of £50,000 (around $66,000).
The novel Flesh follows Istvan, a reserved working-class Hungarian as he encounters the evolution of his life—from youthful love to immigrant experiences in Britain, culminating in his later life amidst high society in London. Szalay describes the book as a contemplation on "life as a physical experience and the essence of existence as a living being in the world."
Roddy Doyle, the chair of the judging panel and an acclaimed Irish novelist, commended the book for its nuanced narrative strength and emotional richness. He noted, "Flesh embodies the essence of existence and its enigmas," after a unanimous decision following an extensive five-hour deliberation.
Doyle further remarked, "We appreciated the succinctness of the prose, where much is implied rather than stated. Through observing this man's evolution, we gained insights not only about him but also of ourselves."
Szalay's understated narrative style leaves significant parts of Istvan's experiences unsaid— pivotal moments like incarceration and wartime service occur off the page, compelling readers to engage their imagination. Critics have praised this method as both audacious and invigorating, although it posed challenges for some.
Originally from Canada, raised in the UK, and residing in Vienna, Szalay has emerged as a distinctive voice in modern literature. He was previously shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2016 for his work All That Man Is, which explores themes of masculinity through interconnected tales.
Other authors in contention for the 2025 Booker Prize included Susan Choi (Flashlight), Katie Kitamura (Audition), and Ben Markovits (The Rest of Our Lives). Andrew Miller's The Land in Winter and Kiran Desai's The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny were predicted to be front-runners leading up to the ceremony.
Since its inception in 1969, the Booker Prize has stood as one of the foremost accolades in global literature, with previous laureates including literary icons such as Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy, Margaret Atwood, and Ian McEwan. The previous year saw Samantha Harvey receive the prize for Orbital.
With Flesh, Szalay joins the ranks of celebrated literary figures. His subtle yet powerful storytelling illuminates that the most impactful narratives are often found in the silences of everyday life.
