Cynthia Erivo Reflects on the Enduring Legacy of Wicked

Post by : Mina Rahman

Cynthia Erivo recently engaged in a heartfelt reflection on her experiences with Wicked, sharing an emotional moment alongside Ariana Grande, Idina Menzel, and Kristin Chenoweth. Visibly moved, Erivo articulated how profoundly the performances of these stars shaped her artistry long before she was cast in the role of Elphaba. She shared her amazement at sitting next to the artists whose voices fueled her aspirations.

As emotions ran high, Grande and Chenoweth instinctively took each other’s hands, while Menzel comforted Erivo with a supportive arm. With tears in her eyes, Chenoweth expressed that the legacy of Wicked thrives with Erivo and future generations stepping into the cherished narrative. She emphasized that each performer hopes their artistry inspires others, and the reality of witnessing that through the film adaptation was particularly poignant. Gratefully, Erivo acknowledged both Menzel and Chenoweth for designing a world that enabled her to realize her dreams, and the four shared a rare moment of intimacy. Menzel humorously lightened the mood by mentioning her relief that they were “still alive” to see how the story has evolved.

Erivo also disclosed that several of the most moving moments in the film’s farewell segment, For Good, were spontaneous. During the poignant exchange between Elphaba and Glinda, she and Ariana continued their acting even after the song concluded. Director Jon M. Chu allowed the camera to capture additional dialogue that was never scripted, such as “What’s going on?” and the sincere “I love you,” showcasing the authentic farewell between the characters.

After completing the film, Erivo expressed to fans her gratitude for the chance to embody Elphaba, noting how the experience profoundly transformed her. She thanked audiences for embracing her interpretation of this iconic role in musical theatre.

Through these intimate moments—both on screen and behind the scenes—Wicked maintains its relevance across generations. The bond between its original stars and the current cast underscores the timeless influence of a narrative that continues to inspire and uplift.
