Cyclone Fina Devastates Darwin: Airport Shut Down amid Power Losses

Post by : Raina Nasser

Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory was hit hard by Cyclone Fina, which caused significant disruption and destruction. The cyclone made landfall late on Saturday, November 22, bringing fierce winds and heavy rainfall. Rated as a category three cyclone, Fina saw wind gusts soar up to 205 kilometers per hour before it moved away from Darwin on Sunday, November 23.

In light of safety concerns, Darwin International Airport announced it would remain closed on Sunday while efforts to reestablish safe operations were underway. The airport cautioned that the region was still experiencing heavy rain and strong winds. Emergency services urged residents to steer clear of fallen power lines and avoid venturing outside due to the ongoing risks.

Darwin, with a population of approximately 140,000, was reminded of the catastrophic Cyclone Tracy in 1974, which wrought extensive damage and claimed lives. Thankfully, there were no severe injuries reported from this event, though numerous homes and local infrastructure faced damages. Power outages were reported citywide, with officials still evaluating the total impact.

Local utility companies commenced damage assessments early on Sunday to identify affected areas and initiate repairs. Category three cyclones like Fina pose a serious threat to buildings, crops, and trees, often leading to prolonged power failures.

This incident follows earlier weather disturbances in Australia, such as ex-tropical cyclone Alfred, which affected Queensland in March and resulted in school closures and blackouts. Authorities are keeping a vigilant watch on the situation, emphasizing public safety and the swift restoration of services in Darwin.
