The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has officially entered into a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tokyo National Museum, aimed at bolstering cultural collaboration and facilitating the exchange of knowledge between Abu Dhabi and Japan.
The MoU was signed at the headquarters of DCT Abu Dhabi, with Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, in attendance. It was formalised by Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, Undersecretary of DCT Abu Dhabi, alongside Makoto Fujiwara, Executive Director of the Tokyo National Museum.
This partnership establishes a well-rounded framework for collaboration in museum research, educational initiatives, and professional growth. It aims to foster cross-cultural exchanges, improve curatorial practices, and provide opportunities for joint exhibitions and public programs that enrich the understanding of both Emirati and Japanese cultures.
During the signing ceremony, Al Mubarak expressed that this agreement highlights Abu Dhabi’s dedication to nurturing meaningful international cultural collaborations. He affirmed that working with Tokyo National Museum will facilitate shared learning, support institutional development, and reinforce enduring connections between the two countries, accentuating the role of culture in uniting societies and inspiring future generations.
Fujiwara expressed enthusiasm for this partnership, emphasizing its potential to enhance the global museum community through shared knowledge and innovative dialogues. He noted that the collaboration will enable joint exhibitions and heritage projects, allowing audiences in both nations to explore each other's rich traditions.
Under the MoU, both institutions will work together on the research, preservation, and conservation of cultural assets, including reciprocal lending of artifacts. The agreement also includes training and exchange initiatives designed to develop museum professionals and foster ongoing collaboration.
Furthermore, the partnership will facilitate joint exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural workshops in Abu Dhabi, enhancing public engagement and dialogue through culture and education.
The agreement reflects DCT Abu Dhabi’s larger vision of strengthening global cultural relationships and positioning the emirate as a leading hub for museum collaboration, research, and the sharing of best practices. This MoU represents a significant milestone in the cultural rapport between Abu Dhabi and Japan, grounded in shared values of creativity, education, and mutual respect.
