Saudi Crown Prince Engages with Trump on Defence, AI, and Nuclear Initiatives

Post by : Raina Nasser

Washington, D.C. – On Tuesday, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) of Saudi Arabia is scheduled to visit the White House for critical discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump. This meeting aims to reinforce the longstanding partnerships in oil, security, and trade while furthering collaboration on technology and nuclear energy.

This visit is MBS’s first to the U.S. following the international backlash from the 2018 assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul. U.S. intelligence reports indicated MBS's approval of the operation, although he has denied direct involvement, attributing accountability to his leadership role.

Despite prior tensions, there is mutual interest in strengthening the U.S.-Saudi relationship. Trump is keen to build on a $600 billion investment commitment made during his earlier visit in May, focusing on economic and strategic partnerships over human rights discussions.

Key Defence Discussions

At the forefront of these discussions lies a prospective defence agreement. Historically, Saudi Arabia has depended on U.S. security assurances in return for advantageous oil arrangements. As concerns about regional instability rise, particularly following Iran's 2019 assaults on Saudi oil facilities and recent Israeli military actions, Riyadh is increasingly advocating for solidified defence support.

The Trump administration is considered to be evaluating an executive order akin to the defence pact established with Qatar. However, Saudi Arabia is lobbying for a more expansive security agreement. Analysts suggest that the U.S. might provide advisory support, defensive assets, or even the deployment of marines, but might not fully commit to a robust defence arrangement.

Advancements in Technology and Nuclear Goals

Aside from military topics, MBS is aiming for advancements in technology and nuclear collaboration to bolster Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 program. Attaining state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and civil nuclear technology would enable the Kingdom to diversify economically and enhance its geopolitical stance against regional competitors like Iran and the UAE.

Notably, Saudi Arabia has dismissed U.S. demands regarding restrictions on uranium enrichment and spent fuel processing, illustrating its commitment to advancing a nuclear program focused on energy security and technological equity within the Gulf region.

Navigating Complex Regional Diplomacy

These discussions unfold within a challenging geopolitical context, intertwining U.S., Israeli, and Saudi relations with the ongoing Palestinian statehood discourse. Saudi Arabia’s defence collaboration with the U.S. is seen as interconnected with Israel’s stance on Palestine, complicating the talks scheduled at the White House.

Experts predict that both parties may leave the meeting with partial successes: the U.S. could provide specific defence support and economic partnership, while Saudi Arabia might secure advancements in technology and civil nuclear initiatives. A Western diplomat remarked, “This showcases evolving diplomacy. Both nations will tread cautiously, mixing ambition with diplomatic realities.”

The outcome of MBS’s visit to the White House could significantly alter the dynamics of U.S.-Saudi relations and bear implications for the broader landscape of Middle Eastern security and economic issues. With discussions surrounding $600 billion in investment opportunities, AI advancements, and nuclear energy collaborations, this meeting marks a crucial juncture in Washington-Riyadh interactions.
