In response to a significant data breach affecting millions of users, South Korea's e-commerce leader, Coupang, has announced a compensation plan of 1.69 trillion won (approximately $1.18 billion). Through this initiative, 50,000 won vouchers will be distributed to each of the 33.7 million impacted account holders. This decision has ignited fierce debates within political circles and among consumer rights advocates.
Coupang's founder, Kim Beom, expressed his regret and commitment to expedite the compensation process following the data leak's disclosure. However, his absence from upcoming parliamentary hearings has drawn further ire from legislators, who are calling for clear answers and accountability from the company’s leadership.
Critics have raised objections to Coupang's choice to issue vouchers tied solely to its platforms, accusing the company of limiting consumer options and converting a grave privacy violation into a promotional strategy.
Choi Min-hee, a prominent lawmaker from the ruling Democratic Party and chair of the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communication Committee, denounced the initiative. She characterized the vouchers as linked to seldom-used services, claiming the compensation method is misleading and primarily benefits Coupang itself. From her perspective, the company seems to capitalize on public discontent rather than providing genuine remediation.
Consumer protection organizations resonate with these sentiments, asserting that the compensation mechanism trivializes the seriousness of the data breach. They contend that providing vouchers encourages continued spending with the company despite the risks associated with its security failures, rather than offering true compensation for the inconvenience and threats posed to users' personal data.
When pressed for a response to the mounting backlash, Coupang refrained from making additional statements besides its initial announcement. Meanwhile, the South Korean parliament will conduct hearings over two days starting Tuesday, scrutinizing the data breach, Coupang's response, and broader concerns regarding data protection and corporate accountability.
