The anticipated press briefing by Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, was unexpectedly called off on Tuesday, casting doubt on her imminent appearance at the award ceremony in Oslo.
Machado, who hasn’t made a public appearance in nearly 11 months, was slated to address the media at the traditional midday pre-ceremony event. However, the event was quietly postponed with no reason provided, and hours later, the Norwegian Nobel Institute announced the cancellation of the briefing.
In an email sent three hours after the event was supposed to begin, the institute highlighted that Machado had recognized the “challenging” journey to Norway. They also mentioned that information regarding her arrival for Wednesday's ceremony remains unavailable, and it is unclear if the press conference will be rescheduled.
Speculation regarding her whereabouts has increased due to the lack of response from her spokesperson following the cancellation. At 58, Machado has not been publicly seen since early January, when she briefly attended a protest in Caracas, faced detainment, and subsequently went into hiding.
Her Nobel accolade, announced on October 10, celebrated her advocacy for democratic reform in Venezuela. Having won the opposition's primary last year, she intended to challenge President Nicolás Maduro in the 2024 elections. However, the government impeded her candidacy, leading former diplomat Edmundo González to take her place.
The period leading to the July 28 election was fraught with political detentions, bans, and numerous allegations of human rights violations. After the electoral council, aligned with Maduro, declared him the victor despite evidence to the contrary, pressure ramped up on opposition leaders. González later sought asylum in Spain after a warrant for his arrest was issued.
Meanwhile, Machado's retreat from the public eye continues as uncertainty surrounds her participation in one of the world's most watched award ceremonies, leaving many questions unanswered.
