Gurugram Doctor Introduces 20-20-20 Breathing Technique to Combat Air Pollution

Post by : Saif Nasser

Recently, the air quality in Delhi, Gurugram, and surrounding regions has significantly declined. A dense layer of smog envelops these areas, leading to widespread issues such as coughing, chest discomfort, burning sensations in the eyes, and difficulty breathing. Experts recommend heightened vigilance regarding lung health during these times.

Dr. Piyush Goel, a prominent pulmonologist from Narayana Hospital in Gurugram, has recommended an effective breathing exercise named the 20-20-20 technique. This method is particularly beneficial for residents of polluted regions and requires no special equipment, making it easy to perform at home.

According to Dr. Goel, polluted air typically causes people to breathe rapidly and shallowly, depriving the body of adequate oxygen. The 20-20-20 technique aims to counteract this unhelpful habit, teaching individuals to breathe deeply and calmly.

To practice this technique, find a clean and comfortable indoor space. If available, position yourself near an air purifier.

Here’s how to execute it:

Inhale through your nose for a full 20 seconds, filling your lungs as much as possible.

Hold your breath for 20 seconds; if this proves challenging, begin with 10 seconds and gradually extend the duration.

Exhale slowly through your mouth for 20 seconds, ensuring that all air is expelled from your lungs.

Dr. Goel emphasizes that deep, measured breaths allow the lungs to expand properly, facilitating optimal gas exchange in the tiny air sacs within. Short breath holds enhance the effectiveness of oxygen utilization, while slow exhalations help eliminate trapped stale air and pollutants.

Engaging in this practice can enhance lung strength and improve overall breathing, while also alleviating mental stress, which often escalates in poor air quality.

While beneficial, this exercise should be complemented by precautions such as avoiding outdoor exposure during high pollution periods, using masks when needed, staying hydrated, and ensuring indoor air remains clean.

The 20-20-20 technique is straightforward and safe for all age groups, with daily practice promising better lung health and resilience against polluted air.
