Colombian Air Force Plane Crash Kills 66, Dozens Injured

Post by : Saif Nasser

A tragic air disaster in Colombia has shocked the nation and drawn global attention. A military aircraft belonging to the Colombian Air Force crashed shortly after takeoff, killing at least 66 people and leaving many others injured.

The aircraft involved was a Lockheed C-130 Hercules, a widely used military transport plane. It was carrying more than 120 people, including soldiers, police personnel, and crew members, when the accident happened. The plane took off from a remote area near Puerto Leguízamo, close to the border with Peru, before losing control and crashing into a forested region.

According to officials, the death toll has risen to 66, making it one of the deadliest air crashes in the country’s recent history. At the same time, rescue teams were able to save more than 70 people from the crash site, many of whom were injured and needed urgent medical care.

The crash happened only minutes after takeoff. Early reports suggest that the aircraft faced a technical problem during its climb and lost altitude before crashing. In some reports, it was said that the plane may have struck an obstacle or faced a sudden emergency, but the exact cause is still under investigation.

The crash site was in a remote and difficult-to-reach area, which made rescue operations more challenging. Local residents played an important role in helping the injured before official rescue teams arrived. Many survivors were first taken to nearby clinics and later shifted to larger hospitals for better treatment.

Images and videos from the site showed thick black smoke rising from the wreckage, along with fire spreading through the area after the crash. Emergency teams worked for hours to control the situation and search for survivors. Some injured passengers were airlifted to major cities, including Bogotá, for advanced medical care.

The aircraft was on a military mission, transporting troops within the region. Officials confirmed that the plane was considered airworthy and that the crew was qualified, which raises further questions about what went wrong.

The tragedy has also led to political reactions within the country. Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. He also pointed out concerns about delays in upgrading military equipment, suggesting that such issues may have contributed to the accident.

Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Aviation experts and technical teams are expected to examine the aircraft’s condition, flight data, and possible human or mechanical errors. The manufacturer has also offered support in the investigation process.

This disaster highlights the risks involved in military aviation, especially when older aircraft are still in use. It also raises questions about safety checks, maintenance systems, and emergency preparedness in difficult environments.

For families of the victims, the loss is deeply painful. Many of those on board were young soldiers serving their country. The nation is now mourning their deaths, while hoping for answers that can prevent such tragedies in the future.

The rescue of dozens of survivors brings some relief, but the scale of the loss remains heavy. As investigations continue, the focus will remain on understanding what caused the crash and how similar incidents can be avoided.
