Diljit Dosanjh’s new single Kufar, featuring actor Manushi Chhillar, has ignited controversy with certain dance sequences drawing claims of objectification on social media. A particularly discussed moment involves a female dancer executing a leg lift while Diljit stands in proximity during the lyrics “jannat ke darwaaze kudiye.” Responding to the outcry, choreographers Shazia Samji and Piyush Bhagat elaborated on their artistic vision for the choreography.
In a recent podcast, Shazia shared that the sensuality inherent in the lyrics necessitated a corresponding choreography. She argued that Diljit’s vocal delivery called for an impactful visual portrayal. Piyush added his support, emphasizing that the song was designed to be bold and stylish with an international flair, stating that the teaser had indicated a “sexy dance,” clarifying the artistic intent upfront.
Both choreographers affirmed that the overarching direction for Kufar was clear: maintain a sexy vibe resonating with the song's energy and Diljit’s diverse fanbase. They emphasized that everyone involved, including Diljit and Manushi, understood the creative choices made. The duo acknowledged that both positive and negative feedback contribute to increasing a song's visibility. Shazia also clarified that Manushi was not responsible for the provocative dance moment, despite being a target for trolls.
Manushi stated her thoughts on the backlash regarding her role in the music video, addressing comments about her career being diminished to mere dance appearances. She highlighted the importance of valuing artistic expression, asserting that every performance and song has its unique significance within the larger creative narrative.
Diljit, reacting to the discussions around the song, humorously noted in a live session that he was unaware of the unfolding controversy during the shoot. He described his album AURA as deeply entrenched in sensual energy, inspired by fans’ feedback about the unique atmosphere of his performances. The album is designed with a captivating, performance-oriented allure.
Regardless of the criticism, Kufar remains popular, already surpassing 2.9 crore views. The dialogue surrounding the track has sparked broader conversations about artistic freedom, pop culture evolution, and the delicate balance between sensuality and societal norms in today’s music videos.
