Major Crackdown in China: 18 Leaders of Zion Church Detained

Post by : Raina Nasser

In a significant operation, Chinese officials have detained 18 prominent leaders of the Beijing Zion Church, marking one of the most extensive crackdowns on unauthorized Christian groups in recent times. These individuals were taken into custody as part of a countrywide initiative targeting unregistered churches, initiated in early October.

The authorities have charged the detained leaders with “illegally using information networks,” a serious allegation that could impose prison sentences of up to three years. Activists argue that such charges are increasingly wielded to stifle the voices of Christian leaders resisting state oversight.

A Timeline of Events

The crackdown commenced on October 9, with law enforcement in Beihai, Guangxi, conducting coordinated raids across multiple provinces. Within days, noted pastor Mingri “Ezra” Jin and nearly 30 other religious figures and church members from different regions, including Shanghai and Guangdong, were apprehended.

Many of those detained were interrogated for several weeks, leading to at least four individuals being released on bail. In a concerning turn of events, family members of some detainees have also faced questioning. According to Chinese legislation, suspects can only be held for a maximum of 37 days without official charges, a timeline that has now been acknowledged for the 18 church leaders.

Warnings from Human Rights Organizations

Christian advocacy groups assert that these arrests signify a troubling trend toward dismantling independent churches operating outside state-imposed regulations. They regard the recent detentions as a manoeuvre to compel religious institutions to comply with government authority.

Founded in 2007 by Pastor Jin, Zion Church flourished to around 5,000 members across approximately 50 urban areas. Following the closure of its physical locations in 2018, the church migrated online. However, stringent new regulations now restrict non-officially sanctioned online religious discourse.

Advocates for religious freedoms emphasize that the arrested individuals were simply engaged in their beliefs while fostering an independent church community. International organizations have echoed these sentiments, urging for transparency and equitable treatment of those detained.
