In a significant escalation, China declared on Friday that it will impose sanctions on 20 American defense firms alongside 10 senior executives following the United States’ recent approval for a substantial arms sale to Taiwan. The Chinese government criticized the US action, asserting that it breaches the “one-China principle” and undermines critical agreements between the two nations.
Communicated through the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the sanctions comply with the nation’s Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law and will be implemented without delay. The statement warned that all parties engaged in the arms sales to Taiwan could expect harsh repercussions, as these sales are considered an infringement on China's internal matters and a challenge to its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Among the sanctioned firms are major players like Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation, L3Harris Maritime Services, Boeing (St. Louis), Gibbs & Cox, Advanced Acoustic Concepts, and VSE Corporation. All assets belonging to these companies within China will be frozen under the sanctions, and any Chinese entities and individuals are barred from engaging in business with the affected firms.
Additionally, the restrictions include 10 senior executives, notably Palmer Luckey of Anduril Industries and key officials from L3Harris and VSE Corporation, who will also face asset limitations and restrictions on activities linked to China.
This development comes on the heels of the US government greenlighting a hefty arms package to Taiwan, exceeding $11 billion. The package encompasses medium-range missiles, howitzers, drones, HIMARS rocket systems, anti-tank missiles, among other advanced weaponry. Taiwan has earmarked five such arms packages within a special defense budget of approximately $39.85 billion, pending approval from its legislature.
In its statement, China reiterated that no country or individual should underestimate its resolve and capability to defend its national sovereignty, pledging a firm response to any related provocations.
