Beijing: In light of a catastrophic fire in Hong Kong that resulted in at least 128 fatalities, China has initiated a comprehensive national campaign to address fire safety in high-rise buildings. This tragic event marks one of the worst blazes in the city’s recent history, raising alarm over the adequacy of existing safety standards in densely populated tower blocks.
Per reports from state broadcaster CCTV, the State Council Work Safety Committee of China has mandated immediate inspections and remedial actions across the nation. This initiative aims to identify significant fire hazards and bolster safety protocols in high-rise structures prevalent in many fast-growing Chinese cities.
Authorities will conduct extensive evaluations regarding the use of flammable and potentially dangerous construction materials in and around these buildings. The directive emphasizes a need for inspection of conventional materials like bamboo scaffolding and non-flame-retardant safety nets, which are still in use at various construction sites.
CCTV also noted that local governments have been called upon to prioritize safety and increase oversight. “All areas must enhance responsibility, harmonize development with safety, and regard the identification and mitigation of fire risks in high-rise buildings as a crucial task,” the statement emphasized.
Officials have been urged to raise supervision levels, intensify enforcement, and ensure that safety enhancements yield significant and lasting impacts. This policy decision signifies China’s ongoing commitment to preventing major accidents and safeguarding residents in its urban centers.
