China Happy as US and Russia Work on Better Relations Says Xi

President Xi Jinping of China recently expressed his strong approval of renewed communication between the United States and Russia aimed at resolving the ongoing Ukraine conflict. In a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Xi conveyed that China is "glad to see Russia and the United States maintain contact, improve their relations, and promote a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis." This marks a significant moment of diplomatic engagement amidst one of the most complex global conflicts of recent years.

Xi emphasized the complexity of the issues at hand, noting that "complex problems have no simple solutions," and reaffirmed China's firm commitment to supporting peace talks and dialogue as the right path forward. The conversation underscored China’s consistent stance of advocating for diplomacy and negotiations rather than escalation or military confrontation.

Putin used the call to brief Xi on recent developments and communications between Russia and the United States, highlighting the progress and ongoing efforts towards a political resolution. The call was initiated at Putin’s request ahead of what could be a historic summit meeting between Putin and US President Donald Trump, signaling a potential breakthrough in peace talks.

This dialogue comes at a crucial time. The Russia-Ukraine war, which began with Russia's major invasion in February 2022, has caused immense human suffering and global economic disruption. Since then, Russia’s relations with Western countries have severely deteriorated, while China and Russia have bolstered their strategic economic and security partnership. Against this backdrop, Beijing’s welcoming of US-Russia dialogue offers a hopeful sign that longstanding tensions might ease through diplomacy.

Looking ahead, Putin is expected to visit China in September for major commemorative events marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. This visit signals continued close coordination between the two countries. Xi and Putin have agreed to work closely to promote high-quality development of their bilateral ties and to foster stability in the region and beyond.

China maintains a delicate balance in this conflict. While Beijing has strong ties with Moscow and continues buying Russian energy, it describes itself as neutral regarding the Ukraine war. It advocates an end to hostilities and stresses the importance of political and diplomatic solutions, criticizing Western arms supplies to Ukraine as factors that escalate the situation.

The potential meeting between Putin and Trump, possibly to be held soon, reflects a shared interest in finding a political resolution to the conflict. Trump has conveyed a willingness to engage with Putin to end the war, though he has also warned of economic penalties should progress stall. Meanwhile, China has defended its trade activities with Russia as legitimate and necessary for its energy security.

This renewed diplomatic activity highlights the evolving global landscape where China plays a pivotal role as a power broker. Its stance encourages dialogue and peaceful resolution, which could influence efforts to bring this devastating conflict to an end. The world watches closely as these major powers navigate complex challenges, hoping for a sustainable peace in Ukraine and broader regional stability.
