China Criticizes Japan PM's Taiwan Comments, Threatens Trade Relations

Post by : Raina Nasser

China has issued a stern warning regarding recent comments from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi concerning Taiwan, arguing that these statements jeopardize the relationship between China and Japan while endangering their economic collaboration.

Takaichi's remarks, which hinted at potential military engagement in the Taiwan Strait, have sparked significant backlash within China. Authorities assert that such comments undermine the political groundwork essential for productive China-Japan relations and may lead to detrimental effects on trade and business interactions.

During a press event on Thursday, He Yongqian, spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce, called on Japan to take responsibility, retract the statements, and adhere to its commitments to China. She stated, "If Japan persists on this misguided path, China will implement necessary countermeasures, and Japan will face the consequences."

He also addressed rumors that China might halt imports of Japanese aquatic products, indicating she had no information supporting such claims. Nevertheless, she pointed out that the Japanese Prime Minister's comments have ignited considerable outrage among the Chinese public.

China cautioned that Japan cannot simultaneously damage Chinese public sentiment while pursuing economic gains. "This approach is not conducive to engaging with China," the spokesperson noted, pressing Japan to amend its conduct promptly.

Takaichi's statements have attracted international scrutiny, reviving concerns regarding militaristic tendencies in the region and escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait, a crucial area for both regional safety and global trade.

China's response signifies the heightened sensitivity surrounding Taiwan and the critical need to preserve stable diplomatic and commercial ties between Beijing and Tokyo.
