A notable development in U.S. aviation relations with Central Asia was announced on Thursday as the Trump administration unveiled multi-billion dollar contracts for up to 37 Boeing jets destined for airlines in Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. This initiative coincided with the 10th anniversary of the C5+1 Summit, a diplomatic forum bringing together the United States and five Central Asian nations.
Air Astana, Kazakhstan’s flagship carrier, is set to purchase up to 15 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners as part of an ambitious fleet modernisation strategy. The carrier, currently operating three Boeing 767s, aims to broaden its routes into North America while enhancing connections across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
For the first time, Tajikistan’s Somon Air has placed an order for widebody aircraft, with plans to acquire 14 Boeing jets—comprising four 787-9s and ten 737 MAX aircraft. The airline currently uses six 737 NG aircraft for 25 destinations and will utilize the new widebodies to introduce intercontinental routes from Dushanbe.
Uzbekistan Airways has transitioned options into a firm order for eight additional 787 Dreamliners, increasing its total widebody orders to 22. Together, these contracts represent one of the most substantial aviation transactions in Central Asia in recent years and reflect the region’s aspirations for enhanced connectivity.
These agreements underscore Boeing's ability to secure international contracts, aligning with U.S. trade strategies while adding to the numerous aircraft orders confirmed globally this year. Discussions regarding a potential deal for 500 aircraft with China remain on hold, yet these Central Asian deals signify a strategic realignment in Boeing’s global sales approach.
Industry experts indicate that these orders are set to transform regional air travel by elevating passenger capacity, introducing new long-haul services, and modernizing aging fleets. For Central Asian airlines, this marks a significant move towards developing a more competitive and globally integrated aviation sector.
