In a challenging match on Tuesday night, the Boston Celtics managed to defeat a struggling Brooklyn Nets team, clinching a 113-99 victory at the Barclays Center. Despite grappling with turnovers, a sluggish defense, and foul issues, the Celtics pulled through to elevate their record to 8-7, finally breaking above the .500 mark.
Boston committed a staggering 20 turnovers, their highest this season, with Jaylen Brown responsible for eight. Derrick White and Payton Pritchard contributed as well, leading to an early fourth-quarter deficit before the Celtics regained control in the final moments.
The Nets, who came into the game with just two wins, had been struggling all season but surprised Boston with a fast-paced and aggressive style.
In the first quarter, Boston’s defense faltered, allowing four transition three-pointers. With the Celtics trailing 21-11 by the time coach Joe Mazzulla called his second timeout, they faced difficulty in containing Brooklyn’s swift pace. The Nets capitalized on fast breaks, scoring 22 points in transition before halftime, far exceeding their typical average of 8.6 points.
Payton Pritchard proved crucial in changing the game’s momentum, nailing three-pointers, scoring free throws, and assisting teammates, which helped Boston end the first quarter tied at 29. He finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists, including five three-pointers.
Jaylen Brown had a powerful performance, tallying 29 points on 9-for-19 shooting. He particularly shined in the third quarter, scoring 17 of Boston’s 27 points, a moment that was essential for the Celtics.
Despite shooting an impressive 61% from the field and 52% from beyond the arc, turnovers proved detrimental. Boston’s 12 turnovers in the first half allowed Brooklyn to score 17 points, disrupting their usually organized play.
Foul troubles compounded their issues, as both Jordan Walsh and Neemias Queta accumulated four fouls early in the third, leading to deeper bench utilization with players like Josh Minott and Xavier Tillman.
In the final quarter, Brooklyn momentarily took the lead with a three-pointer from Michael Porter Jr., but the Celtics quickly regained their defensive focus. Sam Hauser sparked an 8-0 run with a crucial steal and three-pointer. Despite recent struggles, Hauser contributed eight points, seven rebounds, and solid defense.
Derrick White played a key role as well, making critical three-pointers and blocks, helping Boston regain the upper hand. His smart gameplay significantly hindered Brooklyn for the first time throughout the match.
Brooklyn endured a scoring drought, going over seven minutes without a field goal late in the game. Jaylen Brown's deep three-pointer with under three minutes left effectively sealed the win for Boston.
The Celtics are set to meet the Nets again on Friday during an NBA Cup group play game at TD Garden before facing a challenging lineup of playoff-level teams.
Despite the win, Boston is aware of the need to minimize turnovers and enhance defensive efforts. Derrick White emphasized, “We’ve just got to keep getting better.”
