Last month, a cargo plane operated by a Turkish airline skidded off the runway at Hong Kong International Airport, resulting in the tragic loss of two airport personnel. Preliminary investigations indicate that an unexpected surge in one of the aircraft's engines occurred just after landing.
The Air Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA) of Hong Kong released a preliminary report on Tuesday, stating that the flight, managed by ACT Airlines on behalf of Emirates, had been proceeding without issue until touchdown. This unforeseen engine acceleration likely contributed to the aircraft veering off course.
The accident has sparked serious questions regarding cargo flight safety at one of the busiest airports globally. Emergency responders swiftly arrived to manage the situation as the fully-loaded plane skidded across the tarmac, narrowly avoiding vital operational zones.
Investigators from the AAIA are currently analyzing flight data recorders, maintenance records, and pilot communications to clarify the incident's specifics. While early evidence suggests a technical malfunction might be involved, the agency noted that extensive investigation is necessary before a final conclusion can be made.
ACT Airlines and Emirates have shared their condolences with the victims' families and pledged full cooperation with the AAIA, emphasizing a commitment to reviewing safety protocols to avert similar occurrences in the future.
Elaine Wong, Chairperson of the AAIA, remarked, "This initial report underscores the urgent need for rigorous inspection and oversight of aircraft engines, particularly during critical landing phases when planes are vulnerable." The focus remains on learning from this unfortunate event to improve safety standards in the aviation sector.
As cargo flight activity has surged at Hong Kong International Airport—an essential connector between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East—experts have warned that increased operational demands coupled with aging aircraft may heighten risks of such incidents.
With heightened scrutiny on airport operations and cargo handling protocols, the AAIA report arrives at a crucial time. Although runway incursions are uncommon, they often lead to substantial financial repercussions, operational delays, and, in the most severe cases, loss of life.
Further updates will be provided as the AAIA conducts its comprehensive investigation, focusing on engine performance, pilot actions, and safety procedures on the ground. Consequently, the runway has been fully inspected and is now reopened to standard operations.
