Renowned Bollywood actress Kamini Kaushal, whose illustrious career spanned over seven decades, passed away at the age of 98 at her home in Mumbai on Thursday night. This tragic news was confirmed by a close family friend.
Sajan Narain, a family associate, informed the media, “She passed away at her residence in Mumbai late on Thursday night. She was set to celebrate her 99th birthday in February.” The circumstances surrounding her death remain undisclosed, and the family has yet to release an official statement.
Kamini Kaushal is celebrated as one of the quintessential actresses in the annals of Indian cinema. Born in Lahore, she was the daughter of Prof. Shiv Ram Kashyap, a distinguished botanist from the University of Punjab, renowned as the Father of Indian Bryology.
Her acting career took off when Chetan Anand cast her in Neecha Nagar (1946), a film that later won the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie also earned accolades at the Montreal Film Festival, quickly positioning Kamini as an emerging talent in Indian cinema.
During the late 1940s and 1950s, she featured in a series of successful films such as Aag, Shaheed, Nadiya Ke Paar, and Ziddi, establishing herself as one of the top actresses of the time. Throughout her career, she starred alongside iconic actors like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, and Raj Kapoor, garnering both critical acclaim and public adoration.
In 1963, she transitioned to character roles, continuing to dazzle audiences with memorable performances in films like Do Raaste, Prem Nagar, and Maha Chor. Even in her twilight years, she proved her relevance in the industry with roles in major films like Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express and Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh. Her last appearance was a poignant cameo in Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha.
