In a devastating incident in Cebu City, Philippines, at least 11 individuals have perished following the collapse of a major landfill. The tragic event took place last week at the Binaliw landfill, which had over 100 workers on-site during the disaster.
Rescue teams have successfully retrieved 12 injured workers from the rubble, yet over 20 individuals remain unaccounted for, leaving families anxiously awaiting news on their loved ones' fates.
Although initial assessments indicated slim chances for survival after several days buried under tons of waste, rescuers identified signs of life during searches on Monday. Mayor Nestor Archival of Cebu City reiterated that the focus remains on rescue efforts, rather than transitioning to a recovery phase.
The collapse has raised urgent calls for accountability and reform in waste management practices. Environmental authorities have ordered Prime Integrated Waste Solutions, Inc., the landfill operator, to halt operations immediately and submit a comprehensive compliance plan within 90 days.
A thorough investigation has been launched by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to determine the collapse's causes, with a promise to bring those responsible to justice. Lawmakers are advocating for a nationwide review of waste management practices and safety conditions for landfill employees.
Witnesses described frightening scenes during the incident, including one local man whose wife was present at the landfill, recalling a shocking "explosion" of trash that triggered chaos as workers sought safety. His wife’s body was discovered the following day.
The Binaliw landfill occupies approximately 20 hectares, with nearly three hectares dedicated to waste disposal. While investigations are ongoing, early indications point to weeks of heavy rain contributing to the instability of the waste, possibly coupled with engineering shortcomings.
Landfills are a prevalent waste disposal method in major cities like Cebu, a vital economic center within the Visayas region. This tragedy has intensified discussions about existing safety hazards and the pressing need for enhanced regulatory measures to avert future disasters.
