Dhaka, Bangladesh – The powerful 5.5-magnitude earthquake that struck Bangladesh has now resulted in a rising death toll of 10, alongside hundreds injured, as another low-magnitude tremor hit Saturday morning, reigniting fears among the local populace.
The aftershock, measured at 3.3 on the Richter scale, impacted Ashulia, located north of Dhaka, at 10:36 am local time, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. Although it was less severe than the previous day’s quake, the tremor unsettled residents and amplified anxiety within the capital.
In Ashulia and nearby regions, numerous homes that were already compromised by Friday's quake have begun to reveal new cracks. Local residents spent the morning assessing damage and retrieving belongings. Shahnaj Parvin, 44, shared her experience of clinging to a mahogany tree during the quake and returning home to find shattered glassware and damaged walls.
The government has activated its emergency operation center to fully evaluate the extent of the damage and to organize rescue and relief efforts. While the Saturday tremor did not result in further casualties, it underscored Bangladesh's ongoing vulnerability to seismic events.
Experts remind that Bangladesh's geographic setting makes it susceptible to frequent quakes. While aftershocks are anticipated after significant seismic activity, factors such as high population density, aging infrastructure, and inadequate preparedness elevate public fears.
