In a significant update for the tennis community, Carlos Alcaraz has announced his withdrawal from the French Open 2026 because of a right wrist injury, preventing him from defending his title.
The young Spanish athlete shared this decision on Friday, following medical examinations that diagnosed him with tendon inflammation and cartilage damage in his wrist. This injury, which initially surfaced during the Barcelona Open earlier this month, has reportedly become more severe.
After discussions with his medical team, Alcaraz opted to focus on recovery to avoid exacerbating the injury. Consequently, he will also miss the Italian Open, which effectively sidelines him for the entire clay-court season at the elite level.
In a statement posted on X, Alcaraz described the decision as tough but essential, emphasizing that recovery is his current priority. He expressed optimism about his return and emphasized the importance of monitoring his condition closely.
Organizers at Roland-Garros conveyed their heartfelt wishes for a swift recovery, acknowledging that the two-time defending champion will be greatly missed this year.
Alcaraz's absence will have consequential ramifications on the ATP rankings. As the defending champion at both Rome and Paris, losing approximately 3,000 ranking points could dramatically influence the rankings landscape in the weeks ahead.
At just 21 years old, Alcaraz aimed for an unprecedented third consecutive title at the French Open after securing victories in 2024 and 2025. His epic win against Jannik Sinner in the 2025 final, where he saved three championship points in a grueling match lasting over five and a half hours, is already hailed as one of the tournament's most memorable moments.
With Alcaraz's exit, the spotlight now shifts to world No. 1 Sinner and Alexander Zverev, who both have a significant opportunity to make their mark on clay this season.
Nonetheless, the reigning champion’s absence will leave a conspicuous void, indicating that this year's French Open will be notably different.
