Francesco Calzona Resigns as Slovakia's National Football Coach

Post by : Shweta

Francesco Calzona has resigned from his position as the head coach of the Slovakia national football team following unsuccessful negotiations regarding a contract extension, concluding a term characterized by significant progress and memorable triumphs.

The Slovak Football Association confirmed the decision, explaining that negotiations for a new agreement did not result in a consensus. Calzona’s previous contract expired on March 31, and despite an offer for a two-year extension, an agreement could not be reached, particularly concerning the length of future cooperation.

Having previously coached SSC Napoli, Calzona took over the Slovakia team in August 2022. Under his guidance, the team's performance on the international stage improved markedly, highlighted by a significant 2-0 victory against Germany during World Cup qualifying, showcasing the team's enhanced capabilities.

The 57-year-old coach led Slovakia to a commendable showing at UEFA Euro 2024, where the team progressed to the round of 16 and narrowly missed reaching the quarterfinals—an achievement that would have been historic for the nation—losing 2-1 in extra time to England.

Calzona's last match in charge saw Slovakia claim a 2-0 victory over Romania, providing a positive conclusion despite the contract dispute. His time as coach is viewed as a significant phase of advancement, as Slovakia solidified its presence in European football and demonstrated the ability to contend with stronger opponents.

With Calzona's departure, the Slovakia team is now on the hunt for a new head coach, aiming to capitalize on recent gains and prepare for future international challenges.
