Windstorm Hits Calgary: Power Lines Down and Trees Toppled

Post by : Shweta

On Friday, a powerful windstorm swept across Calgary, prompting Environment and Climate Change Canada to issue a warning. Wind gusts reached as high as 90 km/h, leading to significant disruption throughout the city.

City officials reported a notable surge in emergency calls regarding fallen trees and branches. Initially six incidents were reported overnight, but this figure soared to approximately 30 by morning. Emergency crews were dispatched to clear roads and address safety concerns, as numerous streets became obstructed by debris.

The severe winds also caused power lines to fall in various neighborhoods, resulting in hazardous situations. ENMAX, the local utility provider, urged residents to keep their distance from any downed lines, emphasizing that electricity can flow through anything touching them. Individuals were encouraged to report such hazards promptly.

Residential areas experienced property damage as well. In Rundle, potent gusts resulted in part of a home's roof being stripped away, while a large outdoor sign fell onto a parked car in another area. The flying debris posed additional risks as branches and unsecured items were swept into the air.

Some unusual occurrences were reported, including a trampoline lifted skyward and carried off by the wind. These incidents showcase the storm's intensity and the dangers posed by unsecured yard items during extreme weather.

Authorities are advising the public to proceed with caution, minimize travel, and secure outdoor items. They also cautioned against attempting to clear fallen branches or trees entangled in power lines due to electrocuting risks.

Insurance experts noted that typical homeowners' insurance generally covers damages from wind, including those caused by flying debris. Coverage for vehicle damage, however, varies based on individual insurance policies.

Weather officials predict that wind conditions will begin to alleviate overnight, providing some reprieve to the citizens. However, until that happens, safety protocols remain in effect, with crews actively dealing with reported incidents across the city.
