Controversy Surrounds BWF's New 15-Point Scoring Format

Controversy Surrounds BWF's New 15-Point Scoring Format

Post by : Shakul

In a significant shift for the badminton community, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) has introduced a new 3x15 scoring system, shifting the traditional matches to 15 points instead of 21. This new format is set to take effect from January 2027.

The recent announcement has sparked varied responses among participants at the Uber Cup Finals 2026 in Horsens. While some players are eager to embrace the change, others are uncertain about its implications for the game.

Top-ranked South Korean player An Se Young expressed her surprise at the news, mentioning that players will need to adapt swiftly in order to enhance their performance under this new structure.

Indonesian rising star Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah remarked that the revamped format presents a greater challenge, indicating that with reduced points, players must be prepared from the get-go, as recovery time during games diminishes.

Conversely, fellow Indonesian doubles ace Fajar Alfian endorsed the change, highlighting the thrilling pace it introduces. On the other hand, player Nikolaus Joaquin raised concerns about the possibility of matches becoming overly brief.

Japanese doubles competitor Kie Nakanishi, along with her partner, believes their playing style may benefit from this new scoring. The reduced match duration could favor those who play aggressively and swiftly.

Approved during the BWF Annual General Meeting with considerable backing, officials assert that the goal of the new system is to enhance match excitement, ease scheduling, and boost player recovery time.

According to BWF president Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, the anticipated result of this change is an improved experience for both players and their audiences, while making the sport itself more competitive.

Despite the range of opinions, players unanimously agree that adapting to the new scoring system will be critical, potentially ushering in a fresh strategy and approach to contemporary badminton.
