In a sorrowful incident in Saudi Arabia, a devastating bus crash near Mufrihat, close to Medina, left at least 42 people dead early Monday morning. The bus was transporting Umrah pilgrims, many of whom were Indian nationals from Hyderabad, Telangana. This tragic event has deeply impacted the pilgrim community, prompting swift responses from both Indian and Saudi authorities.
The incident occurred around 1:30 am IST as the bus, having just finished its Umrah rituals, was making its way from Mecca to Medina for the next stage of the pilgrims’ spiritual journey, according to reports from Saudi media.
Bus Engulfed in Flames Within Moments
As reported by Gulf News, many passengers were asleep at the time of the accident, leaving scant opportunity to escape. The crash triggered a fierce blaze, reducing the bus to a charred wreck in just moments.
Rescue operations faced challenges as the vehicle was extensively burnt, complicating the identification of victims. Initial assessments indicate that among those deceased, there were 11 women and 10 children, though precise numbers are still being verified by officials.
One passenger, identified as Mohd Abdul Shoiab, was rescued and taken to a hospital, but his condition remains uncertain.
Majority of Victims From Telangana
Several individuals who lost their lives had made arrangements for their pilgrimage through two travel agencies based in Hyderabad—Al-Meena Hajj and Umrah Travels. Their families are struggling with the heartbreaking news as details unfold.
The Telangana government promptly responded, ensuring they remain in close contact with the Indian Embassy in Riyadh. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy directed officials to coordinate with embassy staff to gather precise information regarding the victims. A control room has been set up at the Telangana Secretariat to assist the families affected.
Indian Embassy Assists Grieving Families
To aid families during this tragic time, the Indian Consulate in Jeddah has established a 24x7 emergency control room to coordinate with Saudi authorities for victim identification, survivor support, and arrangements for the remains to be returned to India.
Leaders Express Condolences as Sadness Spreads
Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi confirmed that all 42 victims were Indian nationals. He communicated with Abu Mathen George, the Deputy Chief of Mission in Riyadh, who assured him that efforts to collect detailed information were underway. Owaisi urged the central government to expedite the return of the deceased and provide immediate medical attention to the injured.
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed his heartfelt condolences on social media, stating:
"Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are providing full support to Indian nationals and families affected by this tragedy. My sincere condolences to the bereaved. Let us pray for the quick recovery of the injured."
An Unthinkable Tragedy for Those Awaiting the Pilgrims’ Return
What was intended to be a sacred pilgrimage has turned into profound loss. Families in Hyderabad and across India are anxiously waiting for updates as authorities strive to verify identities and arrange repatriation. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision continue, though the enormity of this tragedy has already reverberated through communities both in India and abroad.
