On November 1, Amaira Kumar Meena, a fourth-grade student, sadly took her own life at Neerja Modi School in Jaipur. An inquiry by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has unveiled the distressing events leading to her death, pinpointing persistent bullying, mistreatment, and inadequate support from school personnel.
The investigation highlighted that Amaira had been subjected to bullying for a year and a half. On the day she passed away, she sought assistance from her class teacher, Puneeta Sharma, five separate times, spending 45 minutes pleading for help regarding her mistreatment. However, her attempts were allegedly disregarded, and instead of support, the teacher reportedly reprimanded her in a way that left her peers in shock. Feeling utterly desolate, Amaira exited the classroom and jumped from the fourth floor.
CCTV footage depicted her in high spirits earlier that morning, enjoying moments filled with conversations, chocolates, and snacks. However, trouble began around 11 am when she faced harassment from a group of boys who had scrawled something inappropriate on a digital slate. Despite her pleas for them to stop and erase it, no immediate support came from the teaching staff.
Additionally, the report surfaced multiple earlier incidents of bullying. In September, her father had reported a classmate who was harassing her, only to be brushed off by the teacher, who claimed that the child “needs to adapt to others.” In October, a boy publicly misquoted Amaira's greeting, leading to a forced apology after her mother intervened. The school, however, took no further actions against the perpetrators. Multiple instances of physical mistreatment and verbal harassment with derogatory implications affected Amaira, while her parents struggled unsuccessfully to transfer her to another school, increasing her sense of isolation.
The report condemned the school for its failure to provide a safe environment or take preventive measures. Despite being aware of the ongoing bullying, neither the teacher nor the school management acted adequately. The absence of safety measures was alarming, as Amaira could easily access the fourth floor from her classroom. There was reportedly no oversight of the CCTV, lack of floor attendants, no student ID requirements, and absent protective nets on higher floors.
Amaira's tragic fate was attributed to a significant lack of empathy, support, and timely intervention from both teachers and administrators. The trauma faced by her was described as “unbearable,” underlining that more stringent monitoring and preventive strategies might have averted this catastrophe.
Her peers, teachers, and parents painted Amaira as a bright, amiable student who excelled in academics and extracurricular activities. The CBSE has mandated the school to provide a comprehensive report within 30 days, explaining why penalties, including potential violations of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, should not be levied.
This harrowing event casts a spotlight on the critical issues of bullying, educational institution responsibilities, and the urgent need for schools to safeguard students against harassment and emotional trauma.
