De De Pyaar De 2: Moderate Box Office Debut for Ajay Devgn's Sequel

Post by : Mina Rahman

Ajay Devgn’s eagerly awaited sequel, De De Pyaar De 2, premiered on Friday, bringing together prominent actors including Rakul Preet Singh, R. Madhavan, and Meezaan Jafri. Directed by Anshul Sharma, the film’s screenplay is credited to Luv Ranjan and Tarun Jain, and it has received a mixed response on its opening day.

Preliminary figures indicate that De De Pyaar De 2 garnered around Rs 8.5 crore on its debut day. Although this is a tad lower than the Rs 9.11 crore of its predecessor released in 2019, it successfully surpassed another Ajay Devgn film, Son of Sardaar 2, which opened at Rs 7.5 crore. Notably, the original Son of Sardaar (2012) launched with a stronger Rs 10.7 crore, showcasing the divergent performance of sequels in Devgn’s recent cinematic history.

Among his upcoming 2024 projects, Raid 2 stands out as the top opener. Directed by Raj Kumar Gupta and featuring Riteish Deshmukh, this film garnered Rs 19.25 crore on its first day—almost double the Rs 10.04 crore debut of the first Raid.

Alongside Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh, De De Pyaar De 2 boasts a supporting cast that includes Javed Jaafery, Meezaan Jafri, Ishita Dutta, and Gautami Kapoor. Devgn and Madhavan, who last shared the screen in Vikas Bahl’s Shaitaan, previously achieved great success with their earlier collaboration that premiered at Rs 14.75 crore and ultimately made Rs 147 crore in domestic earnings. This sequel aims to duplicate the charm of its predecessor, launching over 5,100 screenings nationwide to reach a broader audience.

While the initial numbers appear lukewarm, the true test for De De Pyaar De 2 will unfold throughout the weekend and into the following weekdays, impacting its potential for sustained box office success. With an attractive ensemble, gripping narrative, and sequel allure, the film may still captivate viewers despite its moderate starting performance.
