Bowen Yang Departs SNL Mid-Season Ahead of Final Episode This Weekend

Post by : Mina Rahman

Bowen Yang is poised to exit Saturday Night Live midway through its current season, concluding a significant and distinguished tenure on the beloved sketch comedy series. His upcoming departure symbolizes a pivotal moment for the enduring NBC program, where Yang emerged as one of its most prominent and impactful figures in recent years.

As reported by Variety, Yang's farewell appearance is scheduled for this Saturday. The episode will feature pop sensation and actress Ariana Grande as host, who co-stars with Yang in the forthcoming film Wicked. The legendary Cher is set to perform as the musical guest, ensuring a notable send-off for the standout comedian.

Having joined Saturday Night Live in September 2018 as a writer before the 44th season commenced, Yang's quick-witted humor and distinctive style quickly made him a familiar face behind the scenes. In 2019, just a year later, he was promoted to an on-screen role for Season 45. Yang rapidly evolved into one of the show's most celebrated and discussed cast members, recognized for his daring characters and timely satire on political and cultural matters.

Earlier this year, Yang hinted at a potential exit in an interview with People magazine in April, discussing the show's dynamic nature. He remarked that SNL is a "living" platform that continually embraces fresh talent, suggesting that long-serving cast members, like himself, will eventually need to step aside for newcomers. While he did not specify when his departure would take place, his comments seemed to imply that it was forthcoming.

Throughout his time on Saturday Night Live, Yang garnered extensive acclaim, earning Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025, underscoring his significant influence on the show. In 2019, he also received an Emmy nod for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, honoring his dual role as both performer and writer.

Yang joins a group of cast members who have exited SNL mid-season, including Cecily Strong, who left during Season 48 in December 2022. This change unfolds alongside a broader shake-up of the show's ensemble, as several other performers have confirmed their exits. Devon Walker announced his departure after three seasons via Instagram, with Ego Nwodim, Emil Wakim, Michael Longfellow, and Heidi Gardner also revealing their exits.

Bowen Yang's departure signals the conclusion of a significant chapter for Saturday Night Live. As audiences prepare to tune into his final performance this weekend, many are reflecting on his enduring impact and contributions to a transformative era in SNL's comedic landscape.
