The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) revealed that a substantial $10,000 bonus will exclusively go to air traffic controllers who maintained perfect attendance during the recent government shutdown. Out of over 10,000 controllers who fulfilled their roles without pay, merely 776 met this demanding standard.
The 43-day federal shutdown compelled controllers to continue working without compensation, which caused financial strains leading to missed shifts due to factors such as childcare and fuel costs. Many took on additional jobs, while others found themselves unable to report for duty. These absences resulted in considerable flight delays and cancellations at 40 major airports nationwide.
President Donald Trump initiated the idea of offering $10,000 bonuses to controllers who persisted in their jobs throughout the shutdown. However, the FAA clarified that eligibility was strictly limited to those who had no missed shifts. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy commended these controllers as “patriotic men and women”, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring safe air travel even amidst hardship.
Prior to the shutdown, the FAA was already grappling with a shortage of air traffic controllers. Many could be seen working extensive hours—often 10-hour shifts six days a week. The shutdown exacerbated staffing challenges, spurring some students and seasoned professionals to depart, with an uptick in retirements further stressing the system.
Consequently, the FAA mandated airlines to temporarily reduce flight schedules to alleviate the pressure on air traffic controllers. Pilots raised alarms about potential safety hazards, noting delayed reactions and runway incidents linked to the absences.
Following the shutdown's conclusion, staffing levels have shown signs of improvement, and airlines are now back to normal operation. The FAA remains focused on the recruitment and training of additional controllers to safeguard the future safety and efficiency of U.S. air travel.
