Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Launches in Abu Dhabi

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Abu Dhabi has officially commenced its operations, becoming the first global branch of the renowned American eye hospital, a landmark for specialised healthcare in the UAE.

This inauguration, following last month’s announcement by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, underscores the emirate’s goal to be a top destination for advanced medical services. The institute now provides exceptional diagnostic and surgical services across various ophthalmic specialties.

To celebrate this launch, Her Excellency Dr Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, toured the facility with senior officials from both the DoH and Bascom Palmer. Their visit showcased the institute’s advanced diagnostic suites, surgical theatres, and patient-centered processes aimed at delivering high-quality, efficient care.

Dr Al Ghaithi mentioned that this launch signifies Abu Dhabi’s unwavering commitment to offering world-class healthcare solutions for residents and international patients. She emphasized that the collaboration enhances clinical excellence, fosters knowledge sharing, and aligns with the emirate’s vision for a cohesive, innovative healthcare system equipped to face future demands.

Situated in Mohamed Bin Zayed City, this cutting-edge facility spans 70,000 square feet, greatly enhancing the specialised eye care framework in Abu Dhabi. Services include refractive and laser treatments, sophisticated surgical options, and a broad range of ophthalmic care, from routine examinations to complex cases.

Dr Abdul Rahim Jaffar, Board Member of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Abu Dhabi, acknowledged the UAE leadership's strategic vision in developing an internationally-caliber healthcare ecosystem. He stated that this institute epitomizes global cooperation and guarantees access to premier standards of care, education, and research for patients in the UAE and surrounding areas.

Dr Dipen J Parekh, CEO of the University of Miami Health System, remarked that the Abu Dhabi center is facilitating more seamless care transitions from the Miami network, ensuring continuity while driving performance improvements through data-driven approaches.

Dr Zain Kenderian, CEO of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Abu Dhabi, highlighted that the centre’s digital solutions, clinical guidelines, and scheduling mechanisms are designed specifically for Abu Dhabi’s diverse populace. From the beginning, the priority has been on efficient patient management while maintaining the high standards synonymous with Bascom Palmer in the US.

Clinical leadership has adapted the treatment protocols established in Miami to cater to regional demographics, ensuring that care strategies are globally recognized yet locally pertinent. The institute's priority areas include retinal, corneal, oncologic, and pediatric ophthalmology, addressing immediate requirements while paving the way for long-term specialised growth in the region.

The inauguration of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Abu Dhabi solidifies the emirate’s status as a frontrunner in clinical excellence while minimizing the necessity for patients to travel for advanced eye care, offering extensive support such as visa assistance, concierge services, and inclusive recovery packages for patients from the GCC and beyond.

With its operations now underway, the institute represents a substantial enhancement to the healthcare framework in Abu Dhabi, setting a new standard for specialised ophthalmic care in the Middle East.
