Barcelona’s defender Ronald Araujo was missing from the squad for Saturday’s 3-1 La Liga victory against Alaves. Manager Hansi Flick explained his absence was due to a “stomach virus”.
Araujo last played during Barcelona’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League, where he received a second yellow card late in the first half.
As reported by The Athletic, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco met with Araujo’s representatives on Monday, allowing the 28-year-old some time away from football. The club has extended its full support during this period, stressing the importance of respecting his privacy.
When questioned, Flick stated, “It’s a private matter, and I’d prefer not to elaborate. Please, I’d appreciate your respect in this situation.” There was no further comment from Barcelona outside regular working hours.
Positioned at the top of the La Liga standings, Barcelona is set to face fourth-placed Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou on Tuesday. The team hopes for a solid performance in Araujo’s absence to maintain their league lead.
