Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah Aligns with Rastriya Swatantra Party Ahead of Upcoming Polls

Post by : Mina Rahman

A substantial shift in Nepal's political scene unfolds as the country approaches parliamentary elections set for March, with two influential figures joining forces to disrupt the longstanding dominance of established political entities.

Balendra Shah, affectionately known as Balen, currently serves as the mayor of Kathmandu and has transitioned from a popular rapper to a political figure. On Sunday, he officially became a member of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), marking a strategic alliance aimed at mobilizing their voter base and presenting a cohesive challenge to the traditional parties in Nepal. Analysts view this collaboration as a bold response to the increasing public demand for innovative leadership and substantial political reform.

The Rastriya Swatantra Party, steered by Rabi Lamichhane—a former television host turned politician—has seen rapid growth, especially among youth and urban demographics increasingly disillusioned with the entrenched parties known for their corruption and ineffectiveness.

RSP officials have confirmed Shah's induction and have high expectations for this partnership to enhance their electoral capabilities. “The unification of two vibrant and appealing leaders like Balendra Shah and Rabi Lamichhane fortifies our campaign, providing Nepalese voters with a genuine alternative,” stated an RSP spokesperson.

Political experts believe that this new alliance represents a compelling desire for transformation and a significant departure from entrenched political traditions. As the elections draw near, observers are keen to see if this coalition can effectively contest the established powers and reshape the political landscape of Nepal.

In light of this rising momentum, other political entities are likely to adjust their strategies and form new alliances, setting the stage for what could be one of the most competitive and unpredictable elections in recent Nepalese history.
