Devastating Blaze Levels Bakarganj Market in Kanpur

Post by : Raina Nasser

In the early hours of Wednesday, a catastrophic fire erupted at Bakarganj Market in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, resulting in severe devastation to hundreds of shops and significant financial losses for local traders. The blaze began around 4 AM, releasing thick smoke that filled the vicinity, alarming residents and prompting immediate emergency responses.

Witnesses reported that flames surged rapidly from various stalls, leading them to promptly notify the fire department. Despite the arrival of multiple fire tenders, the ferocity of the flames coupled with thick smoke made effective containment difficult, culminating in the destruction of numerous temporary and permanent shops.

Footage taken at the scene captured the market in flames, with firefighters working relentlessly to combat the inferno while anxious locals viewed the devastation. Authorities are currently probing the origins of the fire, which remains unknown.

This incident follows another significant fire in Kanpur just a day earlier, at the Anandeshwar Cold Storage in Bara, which devastated a large stock of potatoes. Fire officials noted that a lack of a back exit was a significant impediment to firefighting efforts during that incident.

Shopkeepers in Bakarganj Market shared their distress over the loss of their businesses, with collective damage estimates ranging from ₹50-60 lakh. Shop owner Shahzade lamented, “A fire started here, but we have no idea how it began. My cloth shop has been entirely destroyed.”

Another trader, Usha Rathore, recounted, “We were asleep when we were alerted to the fire. Initially, there was no fire brigade; we had to make the call ourselves. Everything is gone. I had stock worth ₹13-14 lakh. I suspect foul play—it's hard to fathom how all shops could burn so easily. I seek justice.”

Ajay, who owns two shops in the market, remarked, “By the time I arrived, all the shops were already engulfed. We had goods worth ₹50-60 lakh in my stores. Everything has vanished.”

Authorities have pledged that investigations will persist to uncover the fire's cause and assist affected shopkeepers. Meanwhile, local residents remain vigilant and are advocating for swift action to avert similar disasters in the future.
