Arunachalam Vellayan, the esteemed chairman emeritus of Coromandel International and former head of the Murugappa Group, sadly passed away in Chennai on November 17, 2025, following a prolonged illness. He was 72 years old.
He is survived by his wife, Lalitha Vellayan, along with sons Arun Vellayan and Narayanan Vellayan, and his grandchildren.
An official statement highlighted his extensive leadership role spanning several decades at the Murugappa Group, emphasizing his contributions to the group's strategic growth and overarching vision. His dedication to value creation and integrity significantly bolstered the Group's reputation as one of India’s most esteemed business giants.
Career Highlights
Arunachalam Vellayan was instrumental across various Murugappa Group companies, including his leadership at Coromandel International Ltd. and EID Parry Ltd. He also held significant positions in external organisations like Kanoria Chemicals & Industries Ltd., EXIM Bank, and Indian Overseas Bank.
Over the years, he was actively involved with multiple industry associations, including the Southern India Chamber of Commerce, Fertiliser Association of India, Indian Sugar Mills Association, and the All India Cycle Manufacturers Association. Notably, he chaired the Board of Governors at the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode (IIM-Kozhikode), contributing to educational leadership.
Education and Recognition
Mr. Vellayan was an alumnus of The Doon School, Shri Ram College of Commerce, as well as Aston University (U.K.) and the University of Warwick Business School (U.K.). In acknowledgment of his remarkable contributions, he received honorary Doctor of Science degrees from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and Aston University.

He characterized him as a personable and knowledgeable leader in business, with a profound understanding of international trade, economics, and management. He lamented the loss, emphasizing its impact on both the industry and the nation.
