Ariane 6 lifted off from Europe’s Guiana Space Centre in Kourou on Tuesday evening, underscoring a milestone for European commercial launch capabilities. The rocket departed at 6:02 pm local time (2102 GMT) carrying Sentinel-1D, the latest addition to the EU’s Copernicus Earth observation constellation.
It was the Ariane 6’s third commercial mission since the expendable launch system entered service last year, reinforcing Europe’s expanding role in orbital services. Constructed by Thales Alenia Space, Sentinel-1D has a mass exceeding two tonnes and carries advanced synthetic-aperture radar capable of imaging the surface regardless of clouds or daylight.
The satellite has been targeted for insertion into a 693-kilometre polar orbit, enabling persistent environmental and climate monitoring. Separation from the launcher was planned 33 minutes and 51 seconds after liftoff to secure the precise orbital parameters needed for operations.
The Sentinel-1 fleet supplies high-resolution radar data vital for forestry oversight, disaster response and maritime surveillance. Its all-weather, day-and-night imaging will bolster Europe’s ability to track and react to environmental changes.
The mission demonstrates both the technical maturity of Europe’s space systems and Ariane 6’s capacity to deploy substantial payloads into operational orbits.
