Ariana Grande Faces Frightening Moment at 'Wicked' Premiere in Singapore

Post by : Mina Rahman

The eagerly awaited Singapore premiere of Wicked: For Good on November 13 encountered unexpected chaos when Australian influencer Johnson Wen rushed toward Ariana Grande on the iconic yellow-brick-road carpet and grabbed her. This alarming incident overshadowed the film’s much-anticipated debut, raising significant concern among fans and industry insiders.

Premiere Celebrations Disrupted

Hosted at Universal Studios Singapore, this premiere was intended to be a joyful celebration of the film's global rollout. Ariana, who portrays Glinda, was joined by co-stars Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. They engaged with fans and posed for pictures until the tranquility was abruptly interrupted.

Videos circulating online capture the chaotic moment when Wen dashed toward Grande, turning to pull her close. Dressed in a white shirt and shorts, he sported long black hair with blue streaks, quickly recognized by internet users as “Pyjama Man,” known for orchestrating similar disruptions.

Startled, Grande attempted to retreat as he wrapped his arm around her. Cynthia Erivo quickly intervened, stepping in front of Grande and demanding the man to stop. Security promptly removed him from the scene as Michelle Yeoh and other cast members rushed to offer their support to Ariana.

Despite the ordeal, Grande remained near her co-stars as she slowly regained her composure.

Understanding “Pyjama Man”: A Pattern of Disturbances

Fans quickly identified the culprit as 25-year-old Johnson Wen, an Australian social media figure notorious for reckless public antics. His alias “Pyjama Man,” originates from his habitual appearances in sleepwear at public events, though his recent actions have escalated to troubling levels.

This isn't the first stunt for Wen; he previously jumped onto the stage during a Katy Perry concert in June and tried to disrupt The Weeknd's show in August before facing removal by security. His past also includes an unwelcome approach to cricketer Virat Kohli, igniting questions on how he continues to breach security at high-profile events.

To amplify the outrage, Wen shared a video of his encounter with Ariana shortly after, captioning it: “Dear Ariana Grande, Thank You for letting me Jump on the Yellow Carpet with You.” This message received immediate backlash from a global audience.

Public Outcry and Security Concerns

Wen's post was met with widespread disapproval, emphasizing the risk he posed and the distress caused to Grande. Comments ranged from critiques of his actions to concerns about the implications for celebrity appearances, with one user stating, “You’re the reason we see fewer events in Asia.” Another added, “Does it bring you joy to disturb celebrities?”

Numerous comments questioned how Wen avoids repercussions for his actions, with statements like, “How aren’t you in jail?” and warnings that his behavior might deter Grande from future visits to Singapore.

Overall, the incident has spotlighted serious concerns about the safety of celebrities and the responsibilities of event organizers to prevent such disruptions.

Why This Incident Matters

While celebrity appearances naturally draw immense fan attention, security breaches like this raise urgent concerns about red carpet safety and the event organizers' duty to protect performers. With increasing incidents of fan aggression and attention-seeking behavior, studios and promotional teams are under rising pressure to bolster security measures during high-profile events.

For Wicked: For Good, a film that heavily relies on global promotional tours, this episode could overshadow its celebratory launch and discourage future appearances in certain areas.
