Oscar-winning composer and artist AR Rahman recently revealed the difficulties he encountered during his formative years. In an open dialogue, he reflected on the daily struggles he faced while observing his father work relentlessly to provide for the family.
Rahman expressed that he lacked the funds to obtain equipment for his initial music studio, and it was his mother’s encouragement that motivated him to pursue his passion for music despite the adversities. After the heart-wrenching loss of his father at just nine years old, Rahman felt compelled to shoulder responsibilities to assist the family.
His early years were largely spent in music studios among musicians who were significantly older than him. He remarked that he had very limited opportunities to engage in school activities or form friendships, creating a stark contrast between his childhood and that of most children.
“I dedicated much of my childhood to studios with musicians in their 40s and 50s. I had little time to relish school life or bond with friends. This shaped my character, but it also meant missing out on the joys of a normal upbringing,” he reflected.
Rahman shared poignant memories of his father’s sacrifices, detailing the immense financial challenges they faced. “My father juggled three jobs just to keep us sheltered. His health deteriorated due to the strain. We also faced shame from relatives, complicating our circumstances further,” he recounted.
He paid tribute to his mother, portraying her as a beacon of strength who endured numerous hardships for the welfare of her children. “My mother was incredibly resilient and brave. She handled all the pain, doing everything possible to shield us. She raised us single-handedly,” Rahman said.
Reflecting on how these experiences shaped his life and career, Rahman noted, “The darker aspects of my childhood took time to conquer. However, they instilled resilience in me and shaped my outlook on life.”
Rahman is currently garnering accolades for his music in Anand L. Rai’s forthcoming film, Tere Ishk Mein, starring Dhanush and Kriti Sanon, set to hit theaters on 28 November.
In addition to his film engagements, Rahman is gearing up for a live performance in Pune at the MCA Stadium on 23 November, featuring notable appearances by Aamir Khan, Boney Kapoor, Sukhwinder Singh, Chinmayi, and Hariharan.
Fans are eagerly looking forward to both the film and the performance, applauding his music and the inspirational journey that led him to achieve global acclaim.
