According to a research note from JP Morgan, highlighted by MacRumors, Apple is gearing up for a significant upgrade for front cameras in its forthcoming iPhone 18 series. This likely includes flagship devices such as the iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Air 2, and Apple's first foldable iPhone, all expected to sport a 24-megapixel front camera, a substantial upgrade from the previous 18-megapixel sensors used in the iPhone 17 series.
This enhancement signals a major advancement in Apple’s selfie capabilities, positing better image quality, superior low-light performance, and greater detail in portrait shots. This transition follows the introduction of the 18-megapixel sensor in the iPhone 17 series, complemented by Apple’s innovative “Center Stage” feature, which optimizes video calls by keeping the subject in focus.
Moreover, the anticipated foldable iPhone—expected to be named the iPhone 18 Fold—might introduce Apple’s inaugural under-display front camera, allowing for a more cohesive inner screen without visible elements obstructing the view. This would be a groundbreaking design shift for Apple. It is speculated that the foldable device will follow a book-style structure akin to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold series.
While the premium variants are looking forward to these camera advancements, the more budget-friendly iPhone 18e and second-gen iPhone 17e are believed to retain a simpler 12-megapixel front camera, appealing to everyday users while managing costs.
Additionally, there are whispers of a potential change in Apple’s release strategy, transitioning from the traditional annual launch to staggered releases starting in 2026. The upscale models, such as the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Air 2, and foldable iPhone, are likely to debut in late 2026, with more standard models slated for spring 2027.
With these anticipated improvements, Apple appears poised to elevate front-camera technology as it taps into current social media trends and increasing demands for high-quality selfies and video communications.
