Algoma Steel Announces Layoff of 1,000 Employees as Shift to Electric Furnace Accelerates

Post by : Mina Rahman

Algoma Steel has revealed plans to terminate approximately 1,000 employees at its Sault Ste. Marie facility, with layoffs starting on March 23, 2026. This decision comes as the company phases out its blast furnace and coke-making operations, representing about a third of its total workforce.

The company's leadership attributed this move to “extraordinary market forces” and significant U.S. tariffs on steel products. Algoma is hastening its conversion to an electric arc furnace, a change initially set for 2027, in a bid to remain viable in an increasingly competitive global landscape.

Union representatives confirmed that numerous union members were issued layoff notices, though the total is still being finalized. Initiatives are being developed to support affected workers, including retraining programs and assistance for trades.

Despite receiving $500 million in federal and provincial loans aimed at safeguarding jobs, these layoffs highlight the significant challenges faced by Canada's steel sector. Local officials have raised concerns that these reductions could lead to lasting repercussions for the economy of northern Ontario.

This decision reflects the precarious nature of manufacturing employment in Canada amid international trade disputes and technological advancements in the industry, raising alarms about future job availability in the area.
